Crucifixion of Jesus

Jesus died for our sins. He took the entire weight of the world’s sin to the cross.

JOHN 2:2 (NIV)

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

Jesus suffered greatly during his torture and crucifixion not only physically but spiritually. He was beaten beyond recognition.

ISAIAH: 52:14

14Just as there were many who were appalled at him
his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being
and his form marred beyond human likeness

Crucifixion was the worst form of torture and execution devised by the Romans and reserved for slaves and criminals.

They were normally nailed or tied to a wooden stake and left to die a slow painful death. The nails were hammered through the wrists into a crossbeam that was affixed to an upright stake.

Occasionally the feet were likewise nailed to the upright stake. As fatigue consumed the sufferer, they could not hold themselves up to enable blood to reach their crucial body organs.

In some cases, it could take days for the sufferer to die. The executioners occasionally broke the sufferer's legs with a club to accelerate death.

JOHN 19:1-3 (NIV)

19Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.

Jesus willingly endured this brutal physical suffering, however, it was our sins that caused Him to cry out to the Father.

MATTHEW 27:46 (NIV)

46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”)

God loved us all so much that His Son Jesus paid the penalty for all sins past, present and future. His death gave us Life.

JOHN 3:16 (NIV)

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

CHRIS TOMLIN: At The Cross

AT THE CROSS LYRICS:

There's a place where mercy reigns
And never dies
There's a place where streams of grace
Flow deep and wide

Where all the love I've ever found
Comes like a flood
Comes flowing down

At the cross, at the cross
I surrender my life
I'm in awe of You
I'm in awe of You
Where Your love ran red
And my sin washed white
I owe all to You
I owe all to You, Jesus

There's a place where sin and shame
Are powerless
Where my heart has peace with God
And forgiveness

Where all the love I've ever found
Comes like a flood
Comes flowing down

At the cross, at the cross
I surrender my life
I'm in awe of You
I'm in awe of You
Where Your love ran red
And my sin washed white
I owe all to You
I owe all to You

Here my hope is found
Here on holy ground
Here I bow down
Here I bow down

Here arms open wide
Here You save my life
Here I bow down
Here I bow

At the cross, at the cross
I surrender my life
I'm in awe of You
I'm in awe of You
Where Your love ran red
And my sin washed white
I owe all to You
I owe all to You

I owe all to You
I owe all to You, Jesus, Jesus

Your love ran red
Your love ran red
