What are the Names of God?

Every name of Jesus Christ shows us an entirely different facet of His being and also His work. Some names reveal the tender side of Jesus which we enjoy so much. Yet various other names disclose that Jesus is the exemplary Judge as well as the roaring Lion of Judah.

Jesus was named prophetically.

MATTHEW 1 20-21 (NIV)

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

These names will help you obtain a much deeper understanding of just how awesome Jesus Christ is. He is worthy of all our praise and adoration.

ADVOCATE (1 John 2:1)

Explanation: When Satan accuses us, Jesus pleads to the Father on our behalf. We are set free and declared righteous.

ALPHA AND OMEGA (Revelation 22:13)

Explanation: Jesus is the beginning and the end. He is the writer and finisher of our belief.

ANCHOR (Hebrews 6:19)

Explanation: He is our guarantee of redemption. In troubling times, through Him we discover toughness and tranquillity.

AUTHOR AND FINISHER OF OUR FAITH (Hebrews 12:2)
Explanation:
Jesus is the one that calls us to follow Him. He guides us on the journey to persevere in our faith. 

BRANCH (Isaiah 11:1)

Explanation: Jesus, the Son of Man is the direct offspring from Adam.

BREAD OF LIFE (John 6:35)

Explanation: We become one with Jesus when we spiritually partake of his flesh and blood. He is the food that sustains us.

BRIDEGROOM (Matthew 9:15)

ExplanationThe Church is the Bride and Jesus is the Groom. He is preparing us to be a blameless and faithful Bride for life.

BRIGHT MORNING STAR (Revelation 22:16)

Explanation: The evening has passed away but in Jesus there is hope and an everlasting brand new day filled with splendour.

CHIEF CORNERSTONE (Ephesians 2:20)

Explanation: Jesus is the solid structure of our faith.

DAYSPRING (Luke 1:78)

Explanation: He is the intense beaming morning star. Jesus is the brand new day providing us a future full of hope.

EMMANUEL (Matthew 1:23)

Explanation: Jesus is God with us. He is the eternal presence of God within His precious flock.

EVERLASTING FATHER (Isaiah 9:6)

Explanation: Jesus is the eternal Father of everyone and we are His children.

HEAD OF THE CHURCH (Ephesians 5:23)

Explanation: Jesus is the one true Leader of us all and the Head of the Body of Christ.

HIGH PRIEST (Hebrews 6:20)

Explanation: Jesus offered Himself on the altar of God to wash away our sins. He provided His blood as a sacrifice for everyone.

HOLY ONE (Mark 1:24)

Explanation: Jesus is perfect, blameless and is the image of God himself.

I AM (John 8:58)

Explanation: Everywhere we go, Jesus is with us. He has always existed and will continue to do so. He is the everlasting God of Israel.

IMAGE OF THE INVISIBLE GOD (Colossians 1:15)

ExplanationJesus is the representation and expression of His glorious Father.

JUDGE (Acts 10:42)

Explanation: Jesus will certainly evaluate the countries as well as individuals according to their actions. Not considering our words, He sees our activities and we will be rewarded.

KING OF KINGS (1 Timothy 6:15)

Explanation: He is the timeless King and every knee will bow to Him. Jesus has all authority in heaven, on and under the earth.

KING OF THE JEWS (Mark 15:26)

Explanation: Jesus is the anticipated Messiah. He will establish the infinite Kingdom of God amongst His people.

LAMB OF GOD (John 1:29)

Explanation: Jesus was crucified to take away the sins of the world.  He was completely innocent and because of His death He gave us life.

LIGHT OF THE WORLD (John 8:12)

Explanation: Jesus reveals who God truly is and shows us how to become children of God.

LION OF THE TRIBE OF JUDAH (Revelation 5:5)

Explanation: Jesus roars from Zion to allow His voice to be heard around the world. He is the infinite prophet of God.

LIVING WATER (John 4:10)

Explanation: Streams of living water is what Jesus offers us. A never ending supply of living water to eternal life.

LORD OF LORDS (1 Timothy 6:15)

Explanation: Jesus the most exalted name that rules for life. He has all authority and reigns in heaven and on earth.

MAN OF SORROWS (Isaiah 53:3)

Explanation: Jesus delivers us from our illness and discomfort by taking them upon himself to bring healing.

MASTER (Matthew 8:19)

Explanation: We pay attention to His voice and gladly obey His will and follow the Great Master with all our hearts.

MEDIATOR (1 Timothy 2:5)

Explanation: He freely offered His life and blood as payment for us to be forgiven and connect with God.

MESSIAH (Daniel 9:25)

Explanation: Assured by the prophets in the Old Testimony, Jesus is the long anticipated rescuer of Israel and the world.

ONLY BEGOTTEN SON (John 3:16)

Explanation: The Holy Spirit came upon the Virgin Mary. God himself made Mary pregnant and Jesus became the Son of God.

PRINCE OF PEACE (Isaiah 9:6)

Explanation: Jesus provides us with deep internal tranquillity. Reconciling with the Father on our behalf produces harmony between Man and God.

PROPHET (Matthew 21:11)

Explanation: Through His Holy Spirit, Jesus is the heart and voice of God reigning over the earth.

REDEEMER (Job 19:25)

Explanation: Jesus freely gave His life and blood as payment to free us from the claws of the Enemy and to restore all that was taken.

ROSE OF SHARON (Song of Solomon 2:1)

Explanation: Bringing healing to our spirits and bodies, He is the most beautiful one.

SAVIOUR (John 4:42)

Explanation: He did not come to place religious beliefs upon us. Jesus came to save us from our sins and from the power of the Enemy.

SERVANT (Matthew 12:18)

Explanation: Jesus is the King of Kings yet He came to serve us and laid down His life for everyone.

SHEPHERD AND BISHOP OF SOULS (1 Peter 2:25)

Explanation: Jesus takes care of us as a Shepherd takes care of his sheep. Gently leading us beside still waters, we rest in Him.

SHILOH (Genesis 49:10)

Explanation: We are secure in Him. Jesus provides us with long-lasting peace and educates us to be still and recognise that He is our God.

SON OF MAN (Matthew 20:28)

Explanation: Jesus was birthed from the Virgin Mary and an offspring of the predecessors of Israel.

TEACHER (John 3:2)

Explanation: Jesus provides us with the knowledge and wisdom we require to live a rewarding and abundant life.

THE ALMIGHTY (Revelation 1:8)

Explanation: Jesus has received power in heaven and on earth. Forever and ever He reigns.

THE AMEN (Revelation 3:14)

Explanation: There is no greater witness than Jesus Himself. He is dependable and His words are reliable and everlasting.

THE BELOVED (Ephesians 1:6)

Explanation: Jesus is the precious Son of God. He discloses to us the heart of God, and the deep love the Father has for us.

THE DOOR (John 10:9)

Explanation: Jesus represents the door for everyone to go through. Taking this step means we can have a relationship with the Father.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD (John 10:11)

Explanation: Jesus gave His life for His sheep that they may have a fulfilling and abundant life.

THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE (John 11:25)

Explanation: Death could not hold Jesus, He rose from the dead. He provides immortality to all that rely on Him.

THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE (John 14:6)

Explanation: There is only one way to the Father and that is through his beloved Son, Jesus.

THE WORD (John 1:1)

Explanation: In Him is all knowledge and understanding of God. The word of God is Jesus in the flesh.

TRUE VINE (John 15:1)

Explanation: Jesus is the true vine and we are the branches. If we continue to be in Him, we will certainly bare long-term fruit.

WONDERFUL COUNSELLOR (Isaiah 9:6)

Explanation: He is the resource of all godly knowledge. His Holy Spirit offers guidance to overcome life’s difficulties.
